"I believe people are remembered by what we leave behind in the hearts of others. If the same can be said of a show, then Newsies will leave a lifetime of memories in many of our hearts. Now that’s ‘Something to Believe In.’”

-Jeff Calhoun, Newsies Director

fun things to do in front of nerdy boys

intentionally mix up zelda and link
mispronounce “anime”
refer to anime as “japanese kids cartoons”
pronounce pokemon as pokey-mon
respond to everything they say with “oh yeah my baby brother likes that!”

I am a nerdy boy and I assure you the only reactions you would get from this are crying or outbursts of rage

you act like your tears aren’t EXACTLY what i want

So I watched this music video, and this is in fact completely untrue. There are many scenes in which black/brown girls are casted.

One could conceivably argue that  any white star who features twerking in a music video is automatically being exploitative.

However, that was not my perception of this video in particular. It actually appeared to me the director took pains to portray a variety of dance styles (ballet, interpretive dance, rhythmic gymnastics, break dancing, twerking, cheerleading, etc.) all as equally valid art forms. Every performing group in the video includes a variety of ethnicities. I think I did actually see a black/brown dancer in the ballet troupe, though it’s difficult to tell. Look in the rear left of this gif:

We don’t know if they cast individual dancers or hired a dance troupe, so if black women are underrepresented that might say more about the dance troupe’s selection practices than the video director’s casting practices.

All the styles of dance, ballet or otherwise are presented in the same fashion — talented professionals being brilliant + Taylor Swift being endearingly incompetent. The black women in the video aren’t portrayed as Taylor’s dancing accessories, but rather as experts in their style:

Moreover, at the end of the video there’s a sequence showing all the different professionals being silly and dancing in a non-choreographed manner, thereby humanizing them, showing they exist outside of their role as dancers in Taylor’s video:

I think if we interpret the twerking scenes in this video as demeaning, that says more about our cultural perception of black women than it does about this particular video’s specific portrayal of black women.

The Silver Chair AU — When Muse A visits a foreign kingdom, xe meets Muse B, who is engaged to the ruler of that kingdom and seems very happy. The ruler of the kingdom tells Muse A that Muse B is under a curse, that every night Muse B goes mad and must be bound to a silver chair lest xe try to kill everyone in sight. The ruler warns that Muse B will say anything to be untied during these psychotic episodes. One night Muse A sneaks down to see Muse B, who begs Muse A to loose the bindings, saying that xe is under the ruler’s terrible enchantment.

Deathbed AU — Muse A is dying, and Muse B comes to sit by their bedside, knowing Muse A could pass at any moment.

Icarus AU — The winged people have always been more distant and aloof than elves, but when Muse A is cast out, wings cut off, xe is found half dead by Muse B, an ordinary human, who tries to nurse Muse A back to health. Muse A has difficulty coping with the human world, feeling like a human with its legs and arms cut off, like a worm in the dirt without the beautiful wings xe once had.

Minions AU — Muse A and Muse B have been together even since their evil villain kidnapped saved them when they were children and took them in. Mostly they just pull off minor heists and plot revenge on the villain’s sworn hero enemy, and are never seen apart, having always had each others’ backs. They have always been loyal to the villain, but the night before the villain’s plan for world domination is set to go into effect, Muse A has a change of heart. Muse A doesn’t want to be evil anymore, and begs Muse B to run away together.

Solitary AU — Muse A is in prison, and the first time xe is placed in solitary confinement, xe can hardly stand the loneliness of it. Muse B has been in solitary for months, longer than xe can remember. When Muse A starts talking out loud to combat the silence, xe is surprised to hear a response come from a grating in the wall, from the cell next door. They keep each other company, but Muse B questions if Muse A’s voice is even real.

Kidnapped AU — Muse A and Muse B awaken to find themselves tied tightly back-to-back to two chairs. Can be set in a pitch-black windowless room, a dark moving traincar, a dank sewer, etc.

Once Upon a Dream AU — Muse A and Muse B have been dreaming about each other since they can remember. Each night they play together, having wild adventures and tender moments of peacefulness, and each assumes the other is merely a figment of their imaginations. But all their dreams have been shared, and when they finally meet, it’s like they already have a lifetime of memories.

Craft Therapy AU — Muse A and Muse B have both been working through some issues in their lives, and as a part of healing therapy, have been required by their doctors to go to a knitting group once a week. They sit, and knit, and maybe even get to know each other.

Strict Boarding School AU — Muse A and Muse B both go to the same extremely strict school. Touching is forbidden, especially between members of the opposite sex, and every fact of their lives are controlled. Security cameras are everywhere, and they are marched to every class in a straight line, given very little free time. There are a few safe places in the school, however, little hideaways hidden from the administrative eye, and one day, Muse A and Muse B discover that they have the same hiding place.

Orphans of Chaos AU — Muse A and Muse B are two of only five children at what their professors claim is an exclusive boarding school. They have lived there their whole lives, but sometimes they have dreams of their parents, of their lives before, glimpses of fantastic fairy-tale places that could not possibly exist in the real world. Slowly, they come to realize that they each have superhuman abilities, and they begin to suspect that their strict teachers and caretakers are less than human, too.

Babysitting AU — When Muse A is accidentally reverted to a very young, childlike state, in mind and body, Muse B has to take care of Muse A until xe turns back. Optionally, Muse A has no memories of Muse B.

Love Potion AU — Muse A unwittingly drinks a love potion and falls madly, ridiculously in love with Muse B, willing to do anything to win Muse B’s affection.

Veritaserum Truth or Dare AU — A simple game of truth or dare between Muse A and Muse B is played only after the two have downed a vial of veritaserum, ensuring that neither can refuse to answer a question truthfully.

Supernatural Hunters AU — Muse A and Muse B are fairly good acquaintances, maybe even friends, but neither one knows that the other is a hunter. When monsters attack the town, they both go into action. Seeing each other, they rush to protect each other, each thinking the other is helpless with no knowledge of the supernatural world.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days AU — Muse A has made a bet with friends that xe can seduce anyone. Muse B is writing an article about all the wrong things people can do in a relationship. Of course, their friends lead them right to each other.
